Quartz is made up of minerals -- specifically, silicon dioxide or silica, most often found on the earth's continental crust. Its crystal system can take many forms, with some of the most beautiful forming a glassy, transparent/translucent composition. The term 'quartz' originated from the Slavic word for 'hard', and it is indeed a hard stone. There are many colors of crystals, and my favorites are the clear colors: amethyst (lavender), citrine (lemon), rose (pink), and tourmaline (mixed colors -- including my very favorite, watermelon tourmaline, which is green and pink). Quartz crystals have been referred to as the "ice of the gods", and have been used throughout the ages for healing or magical purposes. To many, they serve as symbols of beauty, health and power. Clear Quartz especially is thought to bring heightened spiritual awareness to whoever wears, carries or meditates with it.
