Bead of the Week

red agateJust perfect for your Halloween creations -- these Red Agate Evil Eye beads are of stone that was formed from layers of silica from volcanic cavities. Agate is named after the Achates River (now known as the Dirillo River) on the island of Sicily, Italy, whose upper waters were an ancient source of this gemstone. Each strand offered here has 16 round faceted beads, with colors ranging from red to amber, as shown. Each bead is approx. 10 mm. with an approx. 2 mm. hole. Each strand is $10, but for a limited time, take 10% off with the code HALLOWEEN at checkout.

amber glass pendantThe site has an inspiring series of stories aptly called 'Quit Your Day Job', or something to that effect -- and that's the very theme of our lives lately.  I'm in the process of learning how to do that, with my retirement after 30 years in Higher Education and the process of moving into the small business realm, e.g., The Bead Collection.  I've found it to be fascinating -- the new realities of being your own boss, managing your own time, finding creative solutions for managing inventory of beads, boxes, displays, tools, and paperwork, and more!  I had been in a job where I could be very self-directed (College President), but it really is different to not have bosses (board members), an office someone else takes care of, and staff to attend to irritating details, and especially, a large number of team members and colleagues to talk to and work with.  But that's where you come in!

Shannon and I both really appreciate the time you take to post notes, talk to us about your goals, projects, challenges, and passions, to give us feedback, and to send us all the very kind notes about your appreciation of what we offer.  For us, it's not about selling things just to sell them -- our goal is to find the things our customers need, dream about, and want to find that they haven't been able to find before.  We know we pay a key role in the development of your creative design projects, and in fulfilling your goals, and ultimately, the goals/desires of your own customers.  So please keep talking to us through this blog, and in the meantime, a big THANK YOU for all the great engagement so far.

I remember quitting my day job to become a freelance web designer. It was scary! I built my business by saying yes to everyone, even for free work to non-profits, and getting a name for myself. I was thrilled when I got a recurring job designing a monthly newsletter for our homeowners's association. It was great for a while but I really wanted to focus on web design, so after seven years I gave the job away. I used the extra free time to learn more about web design. It worked! My business grew. Whenever I have down times I study the latest thing. It really makes a difference.

Sheila, you are the perfect candidate for success. It's so fun to watch your presence growing on the blog, Facebook, Etsy, and Google Plus. You are ON it and that's what it's all about: strong work!
