Mannequins
Mannequins are effectively dolls, and they come in all shapes and sizes. They have a realistic or stylized appearance, and their purpose is to display clothing for fashion retailers. They are usually made from a durable plastic or fiberglass material. You might see them referred to as fashion dolls, dress forms, or shop mannequins.
While mannequins might have originally been designed for high-end fashion retailers, today you can find them pretty much anywhere clothes are sold. That includes everything from large department stores to small boutiques, and even some thrift stores. Mannequins come in all different shapes and sizes these days too. Retailers can choose from plus size, petite, and even gender-neutral options to best suit their needs.
Dress forms
Dress forms are largely utilized in fashion design schools as well as fashion designers’ studios. Designers use dress forms when sketching their clothing designs and during the construction process. While there are many ways to pad and construct a dress form, a professional quality dress form is generally made with a steel base that is adjustable to allow for different torso lengths. The form is then padded with a high-density polyurethane foam and covered with muslin fabric. This allows for the form to be easily pinned during the design and construction process.
Torso forms
Torso forms, also known as mannequins or dress forms, are used to display clothes for fashion school or retail stores. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and can be made from different materials depending on their intended use. You’ll often see them made from wood, plastic, metal, or even paper.
Headless forms
A headless form is a type of mannequin used in fashion design. Unlike traditional mannequins, which have heads, face and hair, headless forms are just torso and limb replicas. Headless forms come in different styles, sizes and materials, but they all serve the same purpose: to help designers create garments and displays.
There are many benefits to using headless forms. For one, they allow designers to focus on the garment itself, without being distracted by the face or hair. Additionally, headless forms can be more easily dressed and redressed than traditional mannequins, making them ideal for use in fashion school classrooms. And because they come in different sizes and shapes, designers can select the form that best fits their garment’s proportions.
If you’re interested in pursuing a career in fashion design, consider using headless forms as part of your design process.
Child forms
Children’s forms are smaller-scale versions of adult forms used in the fashion industry. These child-size dressmaker’s mannequins are used to showcase children’s clothing designs and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to match different age groups. Commonly used child forms include:
-Toddler form: For displaying clothes for infants and toddlers
-Kid’s form: For displaying clothes for kids aged 3 to 6
-Pre-teen form: For displaying clothes for pre-teens aged 7 to 12
Plus size forms
Evolving from standard dress forms that were used primarily for design and fit, plus size forms are specialized mannequins designed to better represent the proportions of plus size people. These forms typically have a larger bust, waist, and hip measurement than average, and may also have different proportions in the arms, legs, and torso.
While plus size forms come in a variety of shapes and sizes, they are generally designed to be as close to an average plus size person’s proportions as possible. This allows designers and students to better visualize how their clothing will look on a real person, and make any necessary adjustments before the garments are made.
Plus size forms can be made from a variety of materials, but they are most commonly made from fiberglass or resin. Fiberglass forms are typically less expensive than resin forms, but they are also more likely to break or crack if they are mishandled. Resin forms are more durable, but they can be more expensive.
When choosing a plus size form, it is important to consider the purpose for which it will be used. For example, if you need a form for design or fit purposes, you may not need one that is as large as a form that will be used for display purposes. Plus size forms can range in price from around $100 to $1,000 or more, so it is important to choose the one that is right for your needs.
Pregnant forms
Pregnant forms are used to display clothes for fashion school. These forms have a belly that is protruding to show how clothes will look on a pregnant woman. This can be helpful for students who are designing clothing for pregnant women.
Male forms
There are several types of male forms used in fashion design, each with its own purpose.
The dress form is perhaps the most essential piece of equipment for a fashion designer. It is used to drape fabric and get a feel for how the finished garment will look. Dress forms come in both male and female varieties, but female forms are more common.
The headless form is another type of male form used in fashion design. As the name suggests, this form does not have a head, which makes it ideal for displaying shirts, jackets, and other garments that do not need to be fitted to a specific person’s body. Headless forms come in both male and female varieties.
The articulated form is a mannequin that can be posed in different positions. This is useful for displaying how garments will look when someone is moving around in them. Articulated forms come in both male and female varieties.
Female forms
There are different types of female forms that are used for displaying clothes in fashion school. The most common type is the adjustable female form, which comes in many different sizes. Other types of female forms include the plus size form, the petite form, and the mannequin.
Unisex forms
Unisex forms – also known as dressmaker’s forms or fashion Forms – are three-dimensional representations of the human body, used in the design and manufacture of clothes.
There are two types of unisex form:
-The Adjustable unisex form, which can be adjusted to different body sizes and shapes, and is therefore ideal for use in fashion schools and colleges.
-The Static unisex form, which is a fixed-size representation of the human body, and is therefore more suitable for use in boutiques and shops.
